The Color Scheme at Smoke Lives Up to its Name

While unfortunate, it's nevertheless interesting to watch a restaurant space transition through new iterations and see how several different operators conceive the same space. Four years ago 9010 Melrose was home to Murano, with its mod white look and Italian Murano glass chandeliers. Murano was reworked into The Artichoke's Heart with not much of a wardrobe change (new lighting, reupholstered furniture), and as of September 3 the venue has been stamped Smoke, an aptly titled steak spot from the Brick + Mortar guys in Santa Monica. As the name suggests, it's pretty dark in there, mostly blacks and grays, dark granite tabletops, and dark brocade wallpaper. Chef Laurent Saussy is in the kitchen preparing classic American eats.
