It's really so so sad that Food & Wine Best New Chef 2012 winner chef Bryant Ng must discontinue his successful Downtown Southeast Asian restaurant The Spice Table. Although we did know it was coming. Just now Ng blasted out an email confirming that The Spice Table will shut its doors indefinitely after a New Year's Eve (AYCE&D) dinner party, and the cozy eatery, with its pretty rustic dining room, will be leveled to make way for the metro. The silver lining is that Ng is presently scouting nearby sites to relocate.

The Spice Table is serving its last supper December 31, 2013. The Metro Transportation Authority (MTA) will be demolishing our beautiful and storied brick building to make way for a shiny new underground subway station. We are still in the process of looking for a suitable relocation site in Downtown or adjacent for the rebirth of The Spice Table.

In the meantime, Kim & I are overjoyed that we are teaming up with Josh & Zoe (Rustic Canyon, Huckleberry, Milo & Olive, and Sweetrose Creamery) to open a restaurant in Santa Monica during summer 2014. We're still working through the details of the new restaurant, but the food will be influenced by the flavors of Southeast Asia and the culinary heritages of Kim and myself.

Regarding the closing of The Spice Table, I've already gone through the gamut of emotions: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Kim and I opened The Spice Table with no expectations beyond sharing the flavors of Southeast Asia to as many people as possible. The response to what we were cooking and the environment we created exceeded what we ever hoped for. Your support of The Spice Table has helped me grow as a person and a Chef. I hope that The Spice Table has added to the diverse culinary landscape of Los Angeles, expanding the dialogue of Asian cuisine beyond simply Chinese, Japanese, or Korean food. In whatever direction or form The Spice Table takes, I am honored to be a part of something that my staff and I are proud of.

Our final dinner service will be on New Year's Eve, it will be a send-off party of all-you-can-drink-and-eat from 8pm-12:30am. It's a clearance sale...so everything must go! $75/person, limited space, reserve early. Please contact Leah Haimowitz (leah@thespicetable, or 213-620-1840) for details.
