Filippo Cortivo of Osteria Mamma and before that Osteria La Buca plus Max Mamikunian and Marko Shafer of Hotel Cafe are behind Midtown Bar & Kitchen, soft open as of yesterday on Melrose in Hollywood. Cortivo plus his mother, the "Mamma" and chef of Osteria Mamma next-door, together built Midtown's international tapas-style menu, which slants toward Italy. They're going for a comfortable neighborhood place, designed by Mamikunian/Shafer, with a full bar pushing speciality cocktails and international wine. For the next month Midtown will serve dinner Monday through Saturday until about 11 p.m., with the bar closing about 1 a.m. Expanded service to come.
