Yesterday, Jessica Mortarotti and Zach Cox opened a second location of their popular ice creamery, Carmela, on a boutique-filled stretch of West Third, near Fairfax. Their fist brick and mortar location opened just about two years ago in Pasadena, and frequently has a line out the door.
Carmela Ice Cream's new Mid-City location serves the same selection of rotating flavors as their farmers' market stalls and Pasadena shop. Each day, find about a dozen flavors ($3.75 a scoop), including their standard five: salted caramel, brown sugar vanilla bean, dark chocolate cacao nib and lavender honey. The shop makes cones fresh daily, right behind the counter, and offers both regular and cup cones for an extra $1.
Also on offer are ice cream sandwiches, which can be made to order. Already packed pints are ready in the freezer out front. On the counter, next to the register, is a small selection of cupcakes made by Blue Cupcake. Patrons are known to make cupcake sundaes out of flavors like red velvet (with cream cheese frosting), chocolate chocolate and salted caramel. An espresso maker is on the way, so that patrons can order an affogato al cafe day or night. Seating is somewhat limited, but a picnic bench out front is coming soon. Carmela is now open daily from 11 a.m. and until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
