On the back of the menu at the Choudhury family restaurant, Anarkali on Melrose and La Brea, the story of the restaurant's namesake is written: "Legend has it that Anarkali was a beautiful maiden who died in a romantic tragedy when she tried to marry above her status..." Since 2006, the Choudhurys have been serving North Indian cuisine to diners in Hollywood. Four days ago, Mr. Choudury's sons, Amir and Mohammed, opened their own branch of the family restaurant, with the shortened name Anar Indian, on Cahuenga and Yucca.
Anar offers almost exactly the same menu as Anarkali, though the brothers say they hope to expand upon their delivery options and area. The samosas, vindaloo, chicken jalfrezi (chicken sauteed in spiced butter, tomatoes, bell pepper and onions) and beef dishes (unique for North Indian cuisine) are some of the most popular options. While their father still operates Anarkali, and provided guidance in opening Anar, he's mostly left day to day operations to his sons. Hours of operation run daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. [EaterWire]
