After a makeover and new ownership, longtime Santa Moncia stalwart Renee's Courtyard is reborn into Tinga Santa Monica tomorrow! Jerry and Chris Baker of the original (nearly) three-year-old Tinga on La Brea partnered with fancy home collector Michael LaFetra to transform the quirky Renee's into a second outpost of the fun and colorful modern Mexican eatery. What's especially great about Tinga in Santa Monica is that the venue is equipped with three bars and mixologist Joel Black (Comme Ca, Cana Rum Bar, The Doheny) is doing the drinks program, which will be poured daily until 1:30 a.m. Awesome. He focuses on mescals and tequilas, but also aguas frescas, spiked horchata, and frozen margaritas. Craft beer on offer, too.
Some other examples of Black's cocktails are Constant Gardner (La Purita Mezcal, lemon, sage, cucumber, kale juice, chia, house-made orange Curacao, a pinch of salt), There Will Be Blood (Illegal Joven Mezcal, lime, house-made ginger beer, drip of sweet sangrita), and Jamaica Me Very, Very Happy (Agavales Blanco, house-infused with Jamaica flowers, lime, Black's Jamaica infused curaçao, prickly pear).
Baker will serve a Mexican menu similar to what's offered on La Brea with a mix of daily specials. See here the list of eats for Santa Monica.
As for aesthetics, the partners designed Tinga collaboratively, piecing together furniture and design elements from vintage stores and antique shops. They brought in local artist Brett Westfall to add Tinga's signature imagery of "Surfing Tacos" and "Taco on the Run."
Really, a fantastic addition to Downtown Santa Monica. Tinga will operate from 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. (serving until 1:30 a.m.), with brunch, lunch, and delivery to come this summer.
