In what was once the home to Manhattan Beach's Sashi restaurant at the Metlox Plaza, French restaurateur Thierry Perez (Fraiche, L'Epicerie), in conjunction with partner/actor Ty Burrell (ABC's Modern Family), soft open new eatery Chez Soi tonight. And guess who is chef? None other than Mark Gold of the recently shuttered Eva. So this is that project at which he hinted.
Chez Soi, which means "at home" in French, is actually serving an American menu. Well, an American menu with SoCal-sourced ingredients and "European flavors." Which, frankly, doesn't sound like a huge departure from Eva. Burrell, who also owns a place in Salt Lake City called Bar X, brought on his team to do the cocktails here, so expect versions of classics like this.
Check out Gold's menu. It reads very California with a plethora of options for vegetarians. User friendly but inspired, with dishes like chestnut flour pasta and chanterelles; and a wild duck with buckwheat, plum and "puffed" kale. Though one will also find a kale salad, loup de mer with spinach, and a roasted salmon.
A seemingly strong addition to Manhattan Beach, Chez Soi spans 5,900 square feet indoors and out, and is likely to be a prime place for drinks or dinner this summer. Brunch and bar menus to come.
