Sweet/savory pie is/was a trend for a hot minute (simplethings, The Pie Hole, All Jarred Up), and on another note it seems like Australians are really taking to LA with the onset of Coffee + Food, Crust, Curtis Stone's Beverly Hills restaurant, Two Guns Espresso (via New Zealanders) and of course, Eveleigh/Goldie's. And maybe Toby's Estate, too.
And what does pie + Australia = ? Bronzed Aussie, a new meat pie shop coming to Santee Court thanks to Australian entrepreneur Samantha Bryan. The menu right here lists savory specimens like Thai curry chicken, pepper steak, and (supposedly Australia's nation dish) the original ground beef meat pie. Additionally, there's breakfast pies and sides like Vegemite toast, and spinach/feta rolls.
Bryan is also planning a hydroponic indoor garden and an espresso bar using beans from Longshot Coffee, another Australian outfit that's slowing caffeinating Angelenos. Owner Mark Baird will train "qualified baristas." Right now Bronzed Aussie is set to debut on April 20. [EaterWire]
