Situated on the upper dining deck of the Hollywood & Highland complex is Cho Oishi, a new Americanized sushi and shabu shabu joint which soft opened last week. As promised, the 5,600 square-foot restaurant designed by Spacecraft boasts a 30-foot long sushi bar plus shabu shabu tables. The menu is a hodgepodge of expected dishes like gyoza, agedashi tofu, miso soup, seaweed salad, and specialty rolls with names such as Sex on the Moon (fried shrimp, eel, avocado, cream cheese, asparagus, smelt roe topped with fresh tuna, tempura flake, eel sauce, spicy mayo, scallion and caviar) and Snow White (spicy snow crab, avocado, smelt roe, asparagus topped with white tuna and spicy masago). Shabu shabu is served with Kobe beef or pork, seafood, chicken, veggies, the usual.
Operators/father and son team Charlie and Nat Sukitjavanic come to Los Angeles by way of Florida where they run Oishi Sushi in Tampa and Orlando.
