SANTA MONICA— Is the cupcake craze finally coming to an end? The Yummy Cupcakes bakery on Wilshire and 3rd has shuttered or is "relocating," per Facebook. This is management's explanation: "We are franchising and opening stores all over the country. We need to be sure that all our stores going forward have a certain look and feel. The SaMo location was just too big & didn't fit our brand image. We decided it would be better to relocate to a smaller & newer property. We had a great opportunity to lease it to a great tenant & timing didn't allow us to give notice. We have another location very close at 26th and San Vicente that is available and of course Burbank and delivery. We hope to be able to announce the new spot soon. We appreciate everyone's understanding and support!!!!" [Facebook]
AROUND TOWN— Tarzana's sandwich cafe The Carving Board, which added a food truck just recently, is also looking to expand with a second LA location. [EaterWire]
MONTEREY PARK— After four and a half years on S. Atlantic Blvd., small plate Asian fusion eatery The Open Door is fated to shutter following its final dinner service on June 30. However, management will re-conceptualize and introduce a new concept this summer. [EaterWire]
PORTLAND— Salt & Straw, the artisan ice cream company now scooping at Joan's on Third by way of Portland, Oregon, will collaborate with chef Michael Voltaggio on a baked potato ice cream. Think a potato ice cream base studded with chocolate covered bacon crumbs, onion juice caramel, and white cheddar cookie dough to be served during Portland's annual Feast fest in September. [LAist]
