Last year on July 1, foie gras became outlawed in the state of California, and now today, July 1, the shark fin ban kicks in, making it illegal to sell the Chinese delicacy in Cali. Proponents of the law cite the depleting shark population and the brutal process used to procure the fins (which are sliced off live sharks). But Chinatown grocer Emily Gian wonders, "Why single out Chinese people in California when shark fins are legal in many other states?" [LAT]
