Alma is chef Ari Taymor's Downtown underdog which was slowly making a name for itself until Bon Appetit recently declared it the best restaurant in the country, catapulting the modest farm-to-table boîte to A-list star status.
Since inception, Alma has offered diners both an a la carte menu plus a prix fixe option, but beginning November 29 the restaurant will transition to prix fixe dining only. Says Taymor, "We have been getting more and more requests for tastings, and we feel like it's the best expression of our food, best value and generally more fun. But as is we can't accommodate more without a negative impact to the other guests. So after Thanksgiving, Nov 29, we will be offering set menus for 5-courses at $65 and a longer tasting menu at $110." Taymor will be equipped to serve vegetarians, too. The menu switch will reduce the number of diners he can serve on a given night, which means scoring a primetime seat is going to become that much tougher. In other news, Taymor is considering Saturday brunch after the New Year.
