Los Angeles has no shortage of restaurants pushing the local, sustainable, seasonal mantra, but only a handful do it right. One such eatery that follows through with its California sensibility is Square One, the East Hollywood breakfast and lunch place that's usually packed with hungry eastsiders collecting out front. Based on the popularity of Square One and the newer Square One at the Boathouse, owner John Himelstein decided to push the envelope and launch a dinner place, which brings us to Lucky Duck by Square One, open last night in place of the old SiLa Bistro.
Restaurant designers have been loving those floating glass bulbs pictured above. The new Q sushi decorates its ceiling with them and Sugarfish is a longtime fan, too. Partner D'nell Larson is responsible for Lucky Duck's sunny disposition, a modern California bistro sporting two and four tops, one communal table, plus a small dining and drinking bar. Wines here were selected by Lou Amdur of Lou's Wine and Provisions, while plates of farro fettuccine pesto and chilled Dungeness crab with crab butter are by former Water Grill and Gingergrass chef Bryan Stevens. Hours of operation run Wednesday to Monday from 5:30 to 10: 30 p.m.
