BEVERLY HILLS— The former Barney Greengrass at the fifth floor of Barney's New York in Beverly Hills is finally ready to turn over to Fred's on October 16. With a complete overhaul by Steven Harris Architects, this is the third such department store outlet for Fred's, which has locations in New York and Chicago. Executive chef Mark Straussman is bringing fresh, seasonal ingredients and dishes to the popular power lunch spot, which had lived as a smoked fish Jewish deli for years. [EaterWire]
CULVER CITY— City Tavern in both Culver City and Downtown launched brunch last week, with braised bacon and eggs, breakfast poutine, chicken & biscuits and french toast on the menu. Specialty drinks include adult horchata, a Stumptown coffee old fashioned, and bacon bloody mary. Hours run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a 10 a.m. start time in Downtown on Sunday. [ELA]
WEST THIRD— Pistola is launching a Godfather-themed cocktail program under barman Aaron Melendrez (formerly of Neat and Cole's), with something like the Hush Money made with bourbon, fig butter, amaretto and lemon-fennel cordial on the offering. It goes well with the whole old-school Italian steakhouse vibe of the place. [EaterWire]
