The saga that unfolded over the weekend is now seemingly over, as Dumb Starbucks, the social media and local news frenzy begun as a publicity stunt by comedian Nathan Fielder, has been shut down by the health department. Just as Fielder was responding to dozens at a makeshift press conference yesterday afternoon inside the parody store's parking lot, the county health department elbowed its way in to examine the legitimacy of its "operation." Fielder had certainly proved a point about his Comedy Central TV show, Nathan For You, which revolves around small businesses employing non-traditional marketing tactics.
Under the pretenses of acting as an "art gallery," Dumb Starbucks gave out free cups of coffee, hoping to skirt the law. Fielder was confident that his approach was going to allow his project to escape the clutches of Starbucks' cease and desist, but he didn't consider the legality of the food service side. It's a mystery why Fielder didn't simply legally convert the space into a coffee shop since it had previously operated as Gastronomico. Too bad for hundreds of fans who flocked to the sleepy strip mall over the weekend and yesterday. At the moment, there's no word from Fielder except for a You Tube video that summarizes his statement to the press yesterday.
