Stafford + Mathis Kitchen is the replacement eating and drinking facility for FigOly within the Luxe City Center Hotel, the restaurant originally cheffed by Alex Reznik with drinks by Matthew Biancaniello (Pot Bar). But, as some might recall, lickety split, two months in, Reznik decamped, eventually going on to open his own spot, Ditmas Kitchen.
Newly minted at the Luxe as of yesterday, Stafford + Mathis has a two part traditional (Stafford) and adventurous (Mathis) menu by chef Michael Chavez-Martinez formerly of Little Tokyo addition b.o.s. Although aesthetics haven't changed much since FigOly days, Chavez-Martinez is serving some interesting plates happening on the Mathis side like bone marrow with pork jam, bacon glace, brioche, tomato powder and a 61°F egg; and tenderloin tartare with yuzu kosho, soy, black garlic, and a quail egg. Play it safe with Stafford via caramelized onion soup and linguini with clams.
Unfortunately, Biancaniello is no longer crafting thought-provoking cocktails, and the wine list is composed of more known varietals. Believe in mushroom-flavored intoxicants with Biancaniello over at Pot Bar in Ktown.
