Not only is Costa Mesa's epically delicious Sidecar Doughnuts fated for Santa Monica, but the hot doughnut specialist is likely to open in a Downtown space this fall in conjunction with Mendocino Farms. Double whammy. Santa Monica scores lunch and dessert. Or breakfast, depending on how you take your sugar. And for anyone that decides to trek down to the OC fried dough boutique (which is totally worth the 50 minute drive), don't miss the butter/salt, butterscotch pot de creme, and cinnamon crumb versions.

Mendocino Farms has a deal in place to bring its popular, high quality farmers market sandwiches to Santa Monica, and owner Mario Del Pero says he's hired BCV, the architecture firm that designed San Francisco's Ferry Building and won an AIA award last year for Belcampo Meat Co. at the Marin Country Mart (which is also coming to LA). So this one should be a looker. Meanwhile, Sidecar's deal isn't totally finalized yet but looks like it will come to fruition. Also, an additional undisclosed food concept will open next-door.
