San Gabriel's Famed Chinese Restaurant Newport Seafood Coming to Beverly Hills

New, 3 comments

Fans of Chinese food in the San Gabriel Valley, listen up. This is pretty major. Management confirms that lauded San Gabriel Chinese restaurant Newport Seafood or Newport Tan Can is headed to Beverly Hills right by Lawry's on La Cienega. No specific location is revealed, although the two potentials over there are the long defunct Xandros or the more recently shuttered Tanzore space.

For those unfamiliar with Newport Seafood, Jonathan Gold listed the place as 85/101 best restaurants in Los Angeles last year, and bloggers regularly make pilgrimages to Newport for "special" lobster and crab. While the menu is Chinese at its core, one will also find influences from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Originally launched in Orange County in 1989, the restaurant expanded to San Gabriel in 1996, then opened a third outlet in Rowland Heights. Owners eventually sold the OC spot and then shuttered the San Gabriel location and reopened nearby in a bigger space, formerly Marie Callender's. [EaterWire]
