Kyle Schutte is the new chef at Roadhouse LA, the fusion barbecue joint at Improv on Melrose which faced a rocky start when opening chef Robbie Richter departed just a few weeks in. What that means for Roadhouse LA's menu is that Schutte has kept some old dishes, like the deviled eggs and punjabi poutine, and he's reformatted others like the house-cured bacon and the pork ribs. He has totally 86ed other plates, no more aged butter fries, hush puppies, or crispy pig, and added some new ones of his own.
There's corn bread pudding with roasted jalapeño butter, hamachi sashimi with barbecue spice, and a torta with pulled pork. Overall the menu feels less aggressive fusion barbecue, a little bit more approachable, but still with some interesting flavor mashups (root beer bacon?) and the overall theme of Southern cuisine and grilled meats. On the other hand, Dave Fernie's playful drink list remain unchanged.
