What was once BabyCakes, adjacent to Mignon and just a stone's throw from Cole's/The Varnish near 6th and Main, is reborn today as Hero Shop. Chef Eric Park and partner Jonathan Kim of Black Hogg in Silver Lake have done a pretty good job opening up the narrow space to feel slightly larger. They're going for a super simple layout wherein patrons approach the rear counter to place a banh mi order in the name of headcheese, sambal broccoli, and fatty brisket. Although fillings are repurposed into rice bowls and salads, for the soft launch they're only serving banh mi, and in a few days they'll roll out the rest. Today's hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but will expand in the future.
