Nancy Silverton Wins James Beard for Outstanding Chef

New, 2 comments
Matthew Kang is the Lead Editor of Eater LA. He has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. He's the host of K-Town, a YouTube series covering Korean food in America, and has been featured in Netflix's Street Food show.

In a stunning upset, Nancy Silverton finally won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, after earning nominations every year since 2012. The Pizzeria Mozza chef, who also helps oversee the kitchen Osteria Mozza, won out over Sean Brock of Husk in Charleston, Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern in New York, and Suzanne Goin of Lucques.

Silverton was one of many female chefs who received honors yesterday, including Barbara Lynch of Boston's Menton and Sherry Yard, who was inducted into the Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America.

S. Irene Virbila of the LA Times reports that Silverton taking one of the top awards breaks a running streak for the city of Angels. L.A. has not received one of the top five awards in the history of the James Beards, ever since the Foundation started giving the medals to chefs in 2002. If there was ever a chef to bring one home to L.A., it's Nancy Silverton.
