When Malibu Pier Restaurant & Bar officially opens its doors on May 15, the new Malibu pier — a state-owned plot that's been revitalized thanks to Lark Creek Restaurant Group — will be complete. On the far end, across the way from the longstanding Malibu Beach Supply Company store is Malibu Farm. Soon to open on the near end, steps from the sand and PCH is Malibu Pier Restaurant & Bar, with eats and drinks by chef Jason Fullilove (Patina Group).

On the South side of the dock find a long white cottage — that's Malibu Pier Bar where you can sip on a crisp drink and soak up the view. Across the way is the newly finished restaurant with starkly patterned tiles, a long rope chandelier, and a Dennis Hopper photograph of Jane Fonda in Barbarella. Tufted brown leather booths line the white washed walls; a found whale bone guards the open kitchen. There's a quirky ease about the place, befitting its location.

Fortunately for everyone involved, Fullilove has a way with the fruits of the sea. Sustainable fish and shellfish — sourced from local fishermen — dominate the rotating menu. Find sea bass, mussels, clams, octopus and more in riffs on everything from tartare to bouillabaisse. Coleman Farm, Weiser Family Farm, and Scarborough Farms are listed on the menu as produce sources. Soft-open as of tonight, Malibu Pier Restaurant & Bar will be open nightly for dinner (hours of operation may vary by season).
