Gentrification. It isn't just coming, it's already here, especially in Echo Park. Earlier this month, nearly half-century old El Batey Market Number 2 shuttered, with 74 year-old owner Evelia ordered to move out, reports The Eastsider. The new owners, who have converted the building into The Grafton Lofts, are now asking for $6,000 a month for the 1,490 square foot retail space, quite a pretty penny for the neighborhood. Can a new eatery sustain itself in a space with that kind of rent? Remember that Allumette just down the block is also shuttering by June 28, though owners have said they plan to have another concept for the place.
