Burbank is a bit like the Eastside version of Culver City - a place where fast food and fast-casual concepts like to incubate their products. Both cities have mid-level city demographics with high numbers of families, meaning that fast-casual concepts that work well there will likely translate to other parts of town, and other cities across America. Enter PortuCal Peri Peri, an unusual Portuguese chicken spot that opened early last week on San Fernando.
The place serves flame-grilled (what other kind of grilling is there) spiced chicken, much like El Pollo Loco, but with various levels of spice. A quarter chicken runs $8 while a full runs $15.5. Throw in some sides like basmati rice, fries, grilled naan and corn niblets while adding a salad or two to mix it up.
When it comes out, the result is a bit like a more refined, and less vinegary Dino's Burgers, a legendary fusion chicken grill with a few outlets across L.A., notably in the southern part of Koreatown. PortuCal Peri Peri (they need a more Google-able name though) is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
