Garlo's Pie Shop Headed to Westwood Village Late Aug

Matthew Kang is the Lead Editor of Eater LA. He has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. He's the host of K-Town, a YouTube series covering Korean food in America, and has been featured in Netflix's Street Food show.

The Australian invasion, especially in the form of meat pies, continues in Los Angeles with Garlo's Aussie Pie Shop, opening late August in Westwood Village in the expansive Palazzo Apartment complex. This will be one of many locations that Garlo's hopes to bring to the U.S., selling $5 meat and sweet pies to more than just ex-pats by "[educating] and [indoctrinating] the locals with some clever PR and giveaways," says co-founder Sean Garlick (great name there too). He's opening the shop with brother Nathan. One of the reasons for the expansion to the States? It's apparently much cheaper to open a store here, with minimum wage at $9 versus $18 in Australia.
