Who would've known that just a year ago that a classic L.A. institution would make Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurant list? And yet Grand Central Market has landed the coveted spot with its slew of old school and new school eateries, from G&B Coffee, Wexler's Deli, EggSlut, Valerie, McConnell's Ice Cream, DTLA Cheese, Belcampo, Berlin Currywurst, Sticky Rice, Olio, and Horse Thief to Tacos Tumbras a Tomas and Sarita's Pupuseria. It's a bit of a reach to call this single place a best new restaurant, but the award is a testament to Downtown's radical change from culinary wasteland to bona fide food destination. It shows that even after nearly a hundred years, it's never too late for re-invention.
