2014 had plenty of new barbecue places open, from Max City in Eagle Rock and Brick Smokehouse in Venice to Barrel & Ashes in Studio City. The trend isn't stopping soon, but instead of the typical Texas-style barbecue that's been happening around town, Charcoal is bringing the Kansas City-style to Silver Lake in the former Lago D'Argento space. The longtime confused space (which seemed to switch concepts every few years) is being transformed by chef Jeremy Zimmerman, with a debut slated for January along Hyperion.
The modern Kansas City 'cue will come on a dry-rub base, slow-smoked over hard woods, and then covered with a tomato and molasses based sauce. It's a definite change of pace from the Texas-heavy barbecue that tends to surface around Los Angeles. Along with smoked meats, expect a decent lineup of craft beers, and bourbon-heavy cocktails.
When it opens, Charcoal will be open from 4 p.m. to late, plus daily happy hour and Sunday brunch commencing at 10 a.m.
