Fresh off their induction into the first ever National Eater 38, Jaime Martin del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu of La Casita Mexicana fame have opened their fast-casual concept inside the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping center.
Named simply Flautas, the rolled taco operation has been in the works for months now. When we last spoke to the inspiring Mexican chefs back in December, they hinted at an impending opening. Now, per LA Mag, that day has officially come.
Apparently, the easygoing flauta concept was inspired by the pair’s many trips to Mexico, particularly Guadalajara, where the dish is prepared frequently. There are many direct interpretations on the new Flautas menu, though some of Arvizu and Martin del Campo’s own flavors are present as well (think spicy shrimp). And for anyone who doesn’t have a strong sense of what the rolled, fried tacos will look like, there are even plans to go full food court style with the addition of a picture menu.
Flautas is currently serving daily from their simple counter operation in Baldwin Hills. Hours run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with shortened Sunday hours. Head over to enjoy a flauta or two while waiting for the forthcoming debut of Mexicano, the pair’s more upscale sit-down Mexican restaurant and mezcaleria; it's one of the year's most anticipated openings.
