Don Chente Bar & Grill's Casual Mexican Cuisine Hitting South Park

The popular Walnut Park restaurant makes a bid for downtown's growing appetite.

In case you’ve somehow missed the marketing blitz currently underway near Staples Center, Don Chente Bar & Grill is well on its way to South Figueroa.

This sophomore location (the original Don Chente Bar & Grill sits on Florence in Walnut Park) is looking to go big, with a massive 25,000 square feet of total space, spread over several levels. That means a rooftop deck looking across the way at Staples, a red carpet entrance and a stage for live music, all tucked into the former (and already forgotten) Icon LA Ultra Lounge space. Y’know, the one right next to the, uh, Hooters.

As with the prior iteration of Don Chente, guests should expect a seriously casual atmosphere. There are plans for a full bar boasting hand-crafted cocktails, and mariachi music on the weekends. Guests will be able to dine as quick as they please in order to make it to a game at Staples, though more hardcore Chente-heads can expect a bit more VIP service.

On the food front, look for laid-back Mexican fare done with pride by local legend Rocio Camacho, who began running the stoves at Don Chente in Walnut Park last year (it even garnered three stars from LA Weekly). Colloquially known as the Goddess of Mole, Camacho has been making less-than-diehards fawn over her intricate mole flavors, though the true test — all of that descending South Park tourist money — remains to be had.

Things are still ramping up at Don Chente, though it’s best to expect an early 2015 opening. A full 47 ABC License is in the works and their Facebook page is littered with details on open positions for both front of house and kitchen staff.
