Portland's Blue Star Donuts Invades Abbot Kinney in Venice Next Week

Free donuts for all next week.

Portland's finest fried treats, Blue Star Donuts, lands in Venice along Abbot Kinney next week with a massive giveaway at 8 a.m. sharp on Monday, October 19 until supplies run out. The gourmet, brioche-based donut shop officially opens its doors on October 21 (they'll probably need a day to recover from Monday's madness). Owners Micah Camden and Katie Poppe formed their specialty shop back in 2012, only to make for sunnier pastures here in L.A. (they still have their places in PDX).

Original flavors include blueberry bourbon basil, hard apple cider fritter, horchata donuts (!), and even a boozy pina colada donut topped with shredded coconut. Over the next few weeks, Blue Star will release more donuts that'll cater specifically to the local crowd, like strawberry shortcake and mimosa. Using an 18-hour process, the yeasty dough comprises some very high quality ingredients and leans on local sources. And hey, they're fried in rice oil so the thing doesn't taste like a grease bomb when you eat it. The best part of this shop is that everything's out in the open, so you can see how the donuts get made from start to sweet finish.

In addition to fritters, sip on Portland's Stumptown coffee and cold brew if you need a quick morning or afternoon pick me up. Hours run 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., or until each day's supply runs out, which could happy much earlier.
