Things have been relatively quiet over at 71Above since the announcement back in June that Vartan Abgaryan would be leaving Cliff’s Edge to man the kitchen. Now comes word that the bar side of the elevated Downtown dining spot is being staffed up in a big way too, with news that Proprietors LLC is putting together the drinks.

That means, of course, there’s going to be a pretty massive cocktail focus for the 71st floor of the U.S. Bank Tower. The Proprietors folks are behind some of the most revered cocktail bars in New York and Los Angeles (Death & Co. in NYC, The Walker Inn/The Normandie Club in L.A.), and have plans to keep that quality sky high for the upcoming 71Above.

It’s a pretty big coup for the Emil Eyvazoff-owned restaurant and nightlife space, which is still under construction as it overlooks Downtown. When 71Above arrives, there’s a fair chance it’ll become the new shiny jewel of Los Angeles’ pricey dining scene, especially if it continues to attract big industry names along the way.

This marks the second penthouse-level project from Proprietors, with their recent involvement at Skyfall in Vegas's Delano resort. Recall as well that the modern cocktail movement can be somewhat attributed to Dale Degroff's work at New York City's Rainbow Room at the top of Rockefeller Center back in the late 80s. Maybe Proprietors is hoping to capture some of that magic at the incoming 71Above.
