The free drinks have been frequent at Civil Coffee since at least June, as part of the incoming cafe’s foray into Highland Park — and now it looks like the generosity will flow one more time. The upcoming shop has plans to open for real on Saturday, November 14, and they’ll be handing out free companion cups of coffee one last time to anyone who places a beverage order.

Owners (and brothers) Alex and Alan Morales, formerly of Handsome, have been quick to endear themselves to the northeast L.A. neighborhood since word first broke that they were taking their coffee cart off the street in favor of a brick and mortar. They’ve also been taking good care of the coffee itself, hiring Tyler Wells as consultant to oversee the brew program, which will rely on beans from Coava Coffee and Heart Roasters, both from Portland.

As for the space, expect 1,500 square feet of deconstructed beauty, from simple brass touches to brushed cement and a long walnut bar. High ceilings and hanging pendant bulbs keep the place well lit, as designer Charisse Cardenas looks to marry the hip-casual vibe to the surrounding neighborhood.

In addition to espresso drinks, Civil Coffee will offer and expanded food menu that includes morning pastries as well as larger plates like toasts, quiche, muesli, sandwiches, and more.

Civil Coffee opens Saturday, November 14, and will keep daily hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
