Strip mall favorite Falafel Arax is, after some 35 years, expanding beyond their East Hollywood digs. A quick look at their website shows a simple "new locations coming soon," but rumor has it there are two in the works: Studio City, which is still a little ways off, and Glendale, which could be soft open as soon as this week.
A call to the original Falafel Arax confirms the expansion plans into Glendale, though they’re a bit more cagey on a true opening date. At least the address is known, thanks to a sneak shot posted online by a happy new customer: 625 E. Colorado Boulevard. That puts it just off the intersection of Colorado and Glendale Boulevard proper, in — you guessed it — a strip mall.
At first blush it may seem a strange time to branch out, after all these years and decades of praise from local food writers, but the restaurant market is booming overall in Los Angeles, and there's a particular focus on the flavors of the Middle East. That's particularly true with falafel, which is having a mini-moment all its own — so maybe Arax was just biding their time after all these years.
