If you’ve driven past Sqirl lately — and no, not just during weekend brunch hours — it’s likely that you’ve seen quite the line of folks standing around, both day and night. That’s because owner Jessica Koslow has seen fit to apparently throw a food party with just about anyone who comes to town with a cookbook.
The good-natured Koslow certainly has a lot of friends in the industry, and it’s always nice to see out of towners come through to plate up dishes you couldn’t otherwise get outside of their restaurant. Earlier this summer Sqirl partnered with the Maison Premiere folks for a dinner called Sauvage, and just last month she did a cookbook dinner with London’s Violet Bakery.
The next two are happening basically back to back. First is Camino from Oakland, hosting a brunch this Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They’ll be doing some signature salads, a duck sausage hash, an herb frittata, and more — plus doughnuts, apparently. Those, apparently, will be offered a la carte.
The second is an onigiri party put on by Pete Meehan of Lucky Peach. Meehan helped compile and put out the food quarterly’s throwback cookbook 101 Easy Asian Recipes, which apparently includes four different kinds of onigiri. There will also be spam musubi, Sapporo on draft, and more. That one’s going down on Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. at Sqirl Away next door, and costs $55.
Hey, it’s good to stay busy.
