Here’s your first peek at what is soon to officially become Salazar, the river-adjacent Mexican barbecue spot slated to hit Frogtown in early 2016. Tucked into a little slip of land between the 5 freeway and the water, Salazar promises to bring northern Mexico-styled meats and lots of cocktails to the burgeoning micro-neighborhood.
Chef/owner Esdras Ochoa, one of the founding fathers of Mexicali Taco in Chinatown, is behind the new project, in conjunction with business partner Billy Silverman. When they first arrive sometime in late January, Ochoa will be focusing on simple tacos to pair with drinks, while finessing his whole grilled animal game (that menu will launch when the weather turns nicer in spring). Aaron Melendez will be heading up the full bar program, which includes cocktails, craft beer, and wine.
The plan for Salazar is to keep and indoor/outdoor feel, with loads of open space and a sort of casual backyard party vibe. That means lots of natural light, colorful touches, and a groomed exterior that invites folks to spend time outside. M+ is behind the changeover at the location, which spent years previous as an auto body shop.
Look for Salazar to land in Frogtown, right at the edges of Silver Lake and Atwater Village, in late January at the earliest.
