Well here’s a little reverse-crosstown expansion for you. As breweries fight for space inside of industrial buildings near the riverfront in gentrifying Boyle Heights, the neighborhood’s popular Purgatory Pizza is crossing the L.A. River to land a second location in Silver Lake.
As noted in January, the former Madame Matisse on Sunset Blvd. was morphing into another Purgatory Pizza iteration, but now that the place has undergone soft-open mode, the true details have arrived.
More than just a quick service pizza joint with a punk rock sensibility, Purgatory at the Junction (the restaurant’s official name) aims to be many things to many people. Yes there’s the usual nighttime pizza, available daily from 11:30 p.m. on, and featuring the typical array of specialty pies and do-it-yourself options. And of course, this being Silver Lake, vegan and gluten free options abound.
But the real change of pace comes from Purgatory’s large array of daily sandwiches, salads, and pastas. There is even a weekend brunch already underway, featuring redone takes on benedicts, pancakes, and the traditional steak and eggs combo. There’s not really much seating inside to speak of, so best to grab one of the handful of sidewalk tables out front. Better yet, order for pick up or delivery, which is free in the neighborhood with a $15 minimum.
Check out the full pizza menu below, with rotating brunch, sandwich and pasta menus to come later.
