Umami Santa Monica Swaps Fred Segal Location for New Digs Across Broadway

The current location is set for the wrecking ball later this year.

Farley Elliott is the Senior Editor at Eater LA and the author of Los Angeles Street Food: A History From Tamaleros to Taco Trucks. He covers restaurants in every form, from breaking news to the culture, people, and history that surrounds LA's dining landscape.

As has been known for a while, Umami Burger in Santa Monica was living on borrowed time. One of the original outposts of the popular burger franchise, Umami SaMo has lived large in its sunny space alongside Fred Segal on Broadway. But like all things Westside, real estate is king.

And so now it looks like the death blow for that particular location has officially arrived, as developers move in to overhaul the lot in the coming months. Not to worry though: Umami isn’t leaving the neighborhood. In fact, they’re just going around the corner to 525 Broadway, the site of a different mixed use building going into that stretch of Santa Monica, adjacent from the likes of Hostaria del Piccolo.

If anything, the new build-out will be an upgrade from the previous, with nearly 3,000 square feet and some 90 seats inside, in addition to a patio space. The usual array of burgers and fries are available, plus a full beer, wine, and booze license.

Better head to the Fred Segal location of Umami while you can — it’s going to stay open through the fall, until the newest member of the Umami clan arrives, but then it’s gone for good.
