Longtime pop-up roaster Compelling & Rich is the latest in a growing number of local specialty coffee makers embedding themselves within smaller dessert shops around town. In the vein of similar pop-ups he's done elsewhere before, owner Kian Abedini has been fully folded into downtown’s Gelateria Uli for almost two weeks, naming the pop-up concept Frequency Coffee.
The idea, says Abedini, is to highlight not only Compelling & Rich beans (which he roasts himself) but to work a multi-roaster program using coffee from other nearby operators like Stereoscope.
"I see this as a test kitchen for coffee and local roasters," syas Abedini, adding that international roasters like the incoming Tim Wendelboe will also be welcome at Frequency. Overall, there's a "big emphasis on creativity and fun signature drinks," with an aim for quality service to match the experience. The burgeoning Spring Arcade Building seemed like a great place to fly a little under the radar while working on something bigger, given its low-key but growing profile.
Beyond the dessert options from Uli, Abedini’s team is trying to keep things fun and tasty with pastries from Semi Sweet Bakery, and has plans to start offering a fleet of different morning toasts, using bread from popular local baker Clark Street.
Frequency Coffee is open seven days a week, with Monday through Thursday hours beginning at 7 a.m. and weekend hours starting at 9 a.m.
