Loz Feliz's Gelato Bar Reopened in Time To Score Some Jeni's Customers

The shop failed to reemerge following a planned two week remodel.

It looks like Los Feliz will get to continue enjoying the soothing flavors of Gelato Bar after all. Last month, the diminutive dessert shop looked to be closing up for several weeks — and possibly for good — amidst a planned 'remodel' (that cursed word is usually industry speak for 'full-on shutter').

It's no coincidence, of course, that the timing fell right in line with the arrival of ice cream mega-shop Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams just up the block. The planned March 4th re-arrival date (as listed on the signage) came and went, with nary a peep from the Hillhurst location.

As of Saturday afternoon, a handwritten OPEN sign had been taped to the glass.

Well, after eyeing the woefully long lines at Jeni's over this past weekend, it seems the Gelato Bar folks decided to pull down the paper and start siphoning off some of that ice cream business after all. As of Saturday afternoon, a handwritten OPEN sign had been taped to the glass.

That much-discussed remodel inside is still very much in the works, with half of the building just a clutter of tools and bench seating. But the gelato cooler is alive and well, and plenty of locals unwilling to brave the Jeni's crowds were found making their way in on Saturday night.

So it looks as if a local favorite will hold on against the looming Jeni's giant. Assuming the actual remodel comes to pass, there should be lots more seating inside Gelato Bar, and with much shorter lines than the competition.
