Ever since Sun Cafe moved into their airy new vegetarian location just off the freeway in Studio City, there’s been a bit of a hole in their former five-year old space at 3711 Cahuenga. It looks to be filled now though, with the arrival of … another plant-based restaurant.
This one is called, simply enough, Vegetable. The aptly-named cafe might be trying to siphon off some of that leftover Sun Cafe vegetarian clientele, but if so they’re doing it with a vastly different design aesthetic. Forget light and sunny; Vegetable is dimly lit, with hanging matte chalkboard walls, a cooler full of cold-pressed Juice Served Here bottles and of course, some communal seating. Lots of hanging plants do help to freshen things up a bit.
As for the menu, Vegetable styles itself as a comfort food option for the vegetable set, meaning slowly roasted mushrooms, organic glazed carrots and seasonal salads and soups. Nothing quite as fancy as the stuff happening up the street at yet another vegetable-friendly restaurant The Gadarene Swine, but approachable nonetheless.
Vegetable is currently in soft-opening mode, with weekday hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and weekend evenings that run until 10 p.m.
