Stories, a modest book store and cafe along Sunset Blvd in Echo Park, has requested a conditional use permit to serve beer and wine until 11 p.m. on weekdays, and until midnight on weekends, according to the Eastsider. It's a boon for the popular indie bookstore that probably knows that its traditional business model just isn't something that will keep it afloat in this day of e-books and Amazon.
The nearly 1,700 square foot store already has a cafe component to help generate revenue, but owner Liz Garo wants to have a limited live entertainment component plus offer beers and glasses of wine for those who want to hang out on the 36 seat patio. Does anyone want to peruse the cookbook section while sipping on a mug of hefeweizen? Sounds like a winning combination. Stories sells both new, used, and rare books, with pastries from Home Boy and Village, plus coffee from Cafecito Organico.
