Angelenos sure love their ice cream, with some of the more popular vendors attracting serious amusement park-style lines. Soft opened last Monday, Meli's Italian Ice has added another frozen treat option to the mix.

The passion project by husband and wife duo Daniel Lopez and Melanie Gracia pays homage to the classic East coast Italian ice shop with everything from its retro modern décor to its name. In researching the traditions of Italian ice, Melanie noticed a recurrence of eponymous names, hence the birth of Meli's.

In true California style, Melanie uses all natural fruit and fruit bases, organic where possible. In addition to traditional Italian ice, the shop scoops frozen custard and Radio Balls, a layered treat of both Italian ice and custard.

Meli's Italian Ice's soft open hours are Monday to Thursday from noon to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturdays from noon to 11 p.m. Meli's will grand open in June.
