Cassia, which officially launched last Saturday from chef Bryant Ng, wife Kim Ng, plus Rustic Canyon's Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan, has finally posted their opening menu on their website. While many of the flavors echo Ng's efforts at his now-closed Spice Table, there are some great things to order at this Santa Monica restaurant.
The raw bar element features oysters (a must-have in LA these days), king crab legs, and smoked salmon belly, though a trio of seafood platters awaits anyone who wants to start the meal off in a grand way. Delectable appetizers include organic grilled chicken wings, kaya toast, egg custard with uni and braised mushrooms, or fried cauliflower in fish sauce. In all, nothing too crazy or unfamiliar here, though the side menus impart a bit more culinary flair, such as a creative charcuterie section, plus clay oven items that are ideal for sharing.
The mains feature larger, more shareable plates that would probably work as a single entree (but who wants to do that?). Finally, some heavier Asian influence in the noodles and rice quadrant. Overall, a fairly good mix of French bistro fare blended with the flavors of Vietnam and China. On the dessert side of things (which can you see here), the soft-torched meringue in passionfruit creme anglaise looks fantastic, though one early diner did photograph the epic deep fried Paris-Brest. Reservations commence June 23 on Open Table, unless you're willing to just walk in.
