Just about overnight, Santa Monica’s Barcopa has ceased to be. The Main Street bar ran out its lease, and in a note posted to their website told customers of their intent to move on. It's worth mentioning that the Circa93 group (The Room, The Association, The Continental Club, etc.) isn't letting their staff go — they'll be spread around in-house to continue working.

And in that late night bar vacuum, enter the Areal restaurant team from just down the block. Partners Phil Slaughter and Mark Becker have taken over the club space, transforming it almost literally overnight into The Pink Elephant. Truth be told, there’s nothing much too different going on there at the moment (there are still DJ nights and cheapish drinks), but the recently unveiled Instagram account for the bar does show a few cosmetic changes going down.

Current hours for The Pink Elephant (which is named, it seems, after a former down-and-out bar that existed on the same site more 25 years ago) run from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday through Saturday only. Management says hours will be expanding soon though, as they finish building out the space and the staff on site.
