Tenants of the Trees Brings Nightlife Back to the Sleepier Side of Silver Lake

Now soft open.

For more than a year after MJ’s Bar, one of Silver Lake’s most prominent neighborhood gay bars, closed down, there was speculation as to what would follow. Since then we've seen the rise of Tenants of the Trees, a multi-hyphenate space from new hospitality duo Jason Lev — an architectural homes developer — and Reza Fahim, who has worked variously with hospitality groups across the city. Together, the team has set up what can only be described as an adult playground.

Tenants of the Trees houses three unique concepts: the main bar and center piece of the property is the namesake Tenants, is a mid-century cabin bar with an expansive back patio, sunroom, and a vintage Citroën milk truck out back used as a second bar. Then there's Out Of Order, an intimate and secretive (currently invite only) live music venue with a strict no cellphone policy, which hopes to begin attracting top-name talent for one off shows in Silver Lake. And lastly is Concession, a backyard outdoor theatre space suitable for rotating food trucks, which should start up in a few weeks.

In all, the space is a bit of an architectural wonder, with details heavily inspired by Silver Lake’s rich architectural and mid-century history. Lev's company worked to build the place out in just over a year, including planting over a hundred trees and plants on the hillside around back. Fahim, for his part, brought along the concept and design for the three-way location.

On the bar side, Proprietors LLC designed two of the cocktail programs, which barman Mark Daoust executes under GM Jose Rodriquez, previously with Dirty Laundry. Pressed-juice cocktails, boozy teas, batched drinks, and on-tap craft beer keep the place liquored up.

Tenants of the Trees is currently in soft open phase, running friends and family nights as well as private events, with larger roll-outs scheduled over the next few weeks as the other concepts come to live within the overall property. Hours at Tenants run 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. weeknights, and 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Out of Order is open for private events most nights of the week, but Thursday through Saturday keeps hours from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. as well.
