SF's The Chairman Brings Chinese Bao Buns and Rice Bowls to Arts District

The food truck-turned-standalone is expanding to L.A.

There’s a chance you’ve seen The Chairman’s panda-fied logo while wandering around San Francisco on vacation. The longtime food truck expanded into a Tenderloin brick and mortar just this past spring, but now comes word that they’re making way for a southward expansion as well.

Come later this fall, The Chairman, which serves a variety of remodeled Chinese favorites like bao buns and rice bowls, plans to set up shop in the Arts District (where else?), taking over a corner location at 5th Street and Colyton. Yes, right by Urth Cafe.

The Chairman truck (and this L.A. location) are the work of Mobi Munch, a sort of food truck solutions company known for putting big chefs and their concepts into the mobile dining space. That's exactly what they did for Ludo back in the day, when he was running his well-known fried chicken operation.

As you might notice, the unassuming Mobi Munch signage has been up at that location for quite some time — the attached yard is also a parking station for a variety of food truck vendors.

When finished, the brick frontage should open up to reveal a 1,100 square foot space, with lots of (mostly outdoor) seating behind. The actual building itself will house the kitchen and some small seating options, but The Chairman is a counter service type of joint, so most folks will mostly be ordering up, grabbing a number, and making for the ample patio.

Eventually, there are plans to expand into beer and wine sales, but for now ownership is focused on getting the place up and ready in time. Once they're good to go — which should be end of October or early November — they'll be working the same menu as the brick and mortar in San Francisco.
