Handmade basement dumplings

LA Downtowner takes a look inside Peking Tavern Downtown, where handmade dumplings abound and baijiu flows like wine.

An adult chef ragging on a teenager

Amid the news that teen chef Flynn McGarry would be doing a long stint of his Eureka concept in New York City, David Santos ripped apart the 16-year old on Instagram with some biting words: "If you go to this and fork over $160 plus then your a damn fool because I can name so many more actual chefs that actually deserve that money. Maybe one day he will indeed be a great chef I'm not saying that but earn it before you offend most of us that actually are."

Later, chef Ari Taymor chimed in, trolling Santos hard by tweeting that numerous characters are chefs, including Robin Hood, George Washington, and the "meter maid". Note that McGarry has spent time working in Taymor's kitchen at Alma. Taco Maria's Carlos Salgado had a perfect response:

Protect Mexican corn

A bunch of chefs, Mexican and otherwise, are petitioning the Mexican government to keep GMO corn out of their country. Plenty of of local chefs and big names have signed on, led largely by Taco Maria's own Carlos Salgado. You can read the petition here.

More San Fernando Valley ice cream cometh

Good news for heatwave sufferers in the SFV — the (mostly) Florida-based Sloan's Ice Cream is coming to Westfield Topanga on September 18. Their insanely colorful shop won't be hard to notice; just look for the lines of sweaty folks waiting to receive dripping ice cream sundaes.

A Top Cheffer comes to The Strand House

For one night, but still. It's Kristen Kish, season 10 winner, landing in Manhattan Beach on September 28 for a five-courser that costs $150. Kicks off at 6:30 p.m. too, which is perfect sunset time for the beach-adjacent hotspot. Make reservations at 310-545-7470.
