Well, here we are, more than four years after owner Andrew Meieran acquired the iconic Clifton's Cafeteria, and the transformation is as complete as it will be for the public eye, at least for the next few months. With an "official" opening slated for this week, this immersive, 47,000 square foot bonanza retains much of its charm (though with a bit more shine). While Eater has already taken some photos of the interior, the place still wasn't complete.
Now, the main parts of the five story establishment are complete, furnished, and scrubbed down. Originally created as a come-one, come-all experience for anyone who wanted an affordable (or even free) bite to eat, it's a little more updated for 2015, with a profit-geared operation that still encourages diners to donate to Midnight Mission or another outreach group that works in Downtown.
What to expect from the food and drink front? For now a cafeteria-style menu of familiar classic American bites from chef Jason Fullilove boasting a carving station, mac & cheese, meatloaf, sandwiches, and a re-made bowl of Jell-O. Meanwhile, bars scattered around the area prepare cocktails by Damian Windsor. The rest of the concepts, which range a fine dining restaurant, tiki lounge (using artifacts from Bahooka), and basement bar, are still on the way. Until then, take a long walk around Clifton's, and wait your turn for a tray later this week.
