The big craft beer news keeps rolling in for Los Angeles, with yesterday’s announcement from Modern Times Beer that they’ll be setting up a small standalone brewery space in the city sometime next year.

Details are still coming together following the impromptu announcement on Twitter, but regardless the news represents a real coup for L.A. Not since Lagunitas announced plans to set up a massive new Southland outpost in Azusa has such a well-respected enterprise decided to plant a major foothold in greater Los Angeles.

Modern Times did shed some light on the overall expectations of their new pilot brewing spot, saying in a follow-up tweet that the space would focus on "crazy one-offs" and would be more than just a beer destination — plans for vegan food, coffee drinks, and more are also in the works.

Of course, the announcement comes on the heels of yesterday’s bombshell that Golden Road Brewing, long considered the largest jewel in the L.A. craft beer collection, would be selling off to macro beer monster ABInBev. The Modern Times shift also showcases a growing sense of beer community collaboration between San Diego (Modern Times’ home) and their sister city to the north. Add in the upcoming Firestone Walker location in Venice, and suddenly L.A. has a stack of well-respected breweries set to arrive in 2016.

More details on this as it comes, but if Modern Times’ Point Loma or North Park tasting rooms are any indication of possible aesthetics for the unknown upcoming L.A. location, be on the lookout for a converted warehouse space full of quirky details, soon to be populated by craft beer aficionados.
