Playa Vista is turning into a bona fide dining destination all its own, with the most recent arrival being none other than SOL Cocina. The upscale Mexican cantina concept already rocks locations in Newport Beach (with another in Scottsdale, Arizona), but this latest iteration drops straight into The Runway, which is already blooming with a number of other restaurants, including Hopdoddy and the relocated Venice staple Hal’s Bar & Grill.
Inside, the upscale modern motif comes complete with tall ceilings and hanging pendant bulbs, though decorative wood accents do give the place a touch of rustic charm. Henrich Designs crafted the space, which includes a long marble bar, a corner window with views into the Santa Maria-style wood-fired grill, and a semi-enclosed patio complete with fire pit.
For the menu, expect a blend of Mexican favorites like chips and guacamole, ceviche, and a grilled elote, alongside healthier fare like kale salad. There’s an entire section devoted to tacos and tortas, along with a variety of vegan and gluten-free takes. A full bar, including over 70 types of tequila, is also available.
SOL Cocina is now open for dinner, with plans to launch lunch service on Monday, January 25. Dinner hours run 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. weeknights, with extended hours until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
